It is mentioned in a Hadīth that the Nabī of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam told Abū Quḥāfah when he saw that his hair had turned white that, “Change the colour of this hair but do not use black dye.” (Muslim Vol. 3 Pg. 1663) 

In another Hadīth the Rasūl of Allah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam has mentioned, “There will be people who will come later (in my Ummah) and apply black dye like the black colour of the stomachs of pigeons. They will not even smell the fragrance of paradise.” (Sunan Abu Dawood Vol. 4 Pg. 87) 

The Fuqahā have deduced from the above that it is not permissible to dye the hair black. (Fataawa Hindiyyah Vol. 5 Pg. 359)
