Question:
What is the
mas'ala regarding males wearing a ring or wearing more than one ring that
together amounts to less than a mithqaal
Or
Wearing two rings and each ring on it's own are less than a mithqaal but
together are more than a mithqaal ?
Answer:
According to the Kitaabs of Fiqh it is fundamentally permissible for a male to wear a ring with the proviso that it is of silver content, and the ring should not weight more than a Mithqaal (4.86g according to Ahsanul Fataawa.) This means that wearing a ring weighing more than a Mithqaal is not permitted.
As for wearing two rings equivalent to a Mithqaal or even less than a Mithqaal in weight; we fail to find any text of the jurists permitting and sanctioning such an act. If there is a need to wear a ring then this need can be easily fulfilled by wearing one ring as proven in the text to follow, hence there is no need to go beyond that by wearing two rings.
It is recorded in the commentary of Shamaail-e-Tirmidhi that Rasulullah never wore a ring initially. However, he later found out that the non-Arab kings would not attach importance to any correspondence received until and unless it contained a stamp /seal. When Rasulullah began corresponding with non-Arab kings in the 6th year of Hijri he felt the need to acquire a ring and hence acquired one.
This brings us to the conclusion that Rasulullah only acquired a ring due to the need of placing a seal and stamp on correspondence. It is on this basis that the Hanafi scholars state that it is Sunnat for a Muslim judge or ruler to wear a ring. Together with these two (judge and ruler), wearing a ring is Sunnat for any other person that has a need to wear a ring. As for those individuals that don’t have a need (for a ring), although they are fundamentally permitted to wear a ring, it is better for them not to wear one.
