Question:
How does one identify pig skin leather as it is not permissible to use.
Answer:
terms of Sharī’ah, it is impermissible to use any such item that is made from pig skin.
Unfortunately, nowadays we find many day to day products in the market that are made from pig skin leather, for example, shoes, jackets, wallets, purses, gloves etc. It is amazing that many Muslims do not know if they are actually wearing a leather jacket, a shoe, carrying a purse or any other leather product that is made of pig skin. This is why it is essential to ensure that the leather products we are using are not made from pig skin.
Some factors in identifying pig skin leather:
o The leather made of pig skin is generally thinner compared to other types of leather.
o It is sold at low rates in the market.
o It has tiny spots and holes, generally in a three dot-pattern (however, it will be difficult to identify these spots many a times).
o It is strong, durable, and tough.
o It is water resistant.
o Some companies have special markings indicating that so and so product is made with pigskin, so such symbols/indications should be looked for on the product.
o Some words that are used to indicate pig skin are: “Pigskin” “Peccary Leather”, “Pig Suede”, “Pork Suede” etc. Some even say that most products that say “Genuine Leather” are made from pig skin.
However, the safest thing to do, would be to contact the company and manufacturers of the product and confirm with them which type of leather is being used in their products as they will best be able to inform one about their products. Many companies, for instance, Clarks, Hush Puppies etc. are always willing to inform their customers about the type of leather being used in their products. In this manner, one can refrain from using leather made from pigskin.
