Question:
Please
advise about rakaats of taraweeh one should follow? Also how many rakaats of
taraweeh followed in masjid ul nabi and masjid e Haram?
Please advice about the reading through mushaf while offering
taraweeh? What should we prefer ? Either to offer taraweeh salaat with small
surahs which we remember or by reading through open mushaf?

Answer:
From the texts of the Fuqahaa (jurists) we learn that Salaatut Taraaweeh is 20 Rakaats as was the practice of our beloved Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam and his noble companions Radhiallahu Anhum. Hence, 20 Rakaats of Taraweeh is also performed in the Haramin (Masjid-ul-Haraam and Masjid-u-Nabawi). (May Allah Ta'aala protect the Haramain Shareefain) (Fataawa Mahmudiyyah Vol. 7 Pg. 255)
According to the Hanafi School of Fiqh (jurisprudence), reciting from the Mushaf while in Salaah will nullify the Salaah. Therefore, our advice is that the people of the locality should try their utmost to organize a Haafidh to lead the people in Taraawaaeh Salaah as it is a great Sunnah to listen to the Quraan in Taraaweeh Salaah in the month of Ramadhaan. If there is no Haafidh available, then you may read the last ten Surahs of the noble Quraan. (Fataawa Mahmudiyyah Vol. 7 Pg. 309)
