Question:
At our local masjid, a
Quran completion ceremony was taking place as a student became an Hafidh. The
organisers of the event catered for a sisters only Hall in the masjid so
sisters could attend too. The organisers also had a camera man who recorded all
the male Ulama that gave a Bayaan. This was broadcasted live to the sisters
Hall via a large screen.
Is it permissible to do this considering that sisters will be compelled to look
at a screen which has male non mahram on display?
Answer:
In this day and age, there really isn’t a need for women to attend such gatherings even though there may be separate facilities made available to them. This is due to the fact that majority of the programmes held at the Masajid are broadcasted and may be heard over receivers in the comfort of one’s home. If these facilities are not yet available in your country then we are certain that live audio-streaming is available, as live audio-streaming is used as a means of transmitting lectures perhaps throughout the world. Therefore, the need for females to emerge from the house to listen to Hifz completions and attend such Jalsas does not exist any longer. This brings us to the conclusion that females should remain indoors and listen to these programmes at home.
Secondly, we concur with your view that it is impermissible to record the speakers (on video) at the programme, and then further relay the videos over a large screen to the females. The organizers and viewers should sincerely repent from such an act and refrain from doing so in the future.
And Allah Ta'aala knows best
