Question:

Is stunned meat permissible to consume?

Answer:

Yes, the meat of an animal that is stunned pre-slaughter is Halaal and permissible to consume, provided that the animal is still alive when slaughtered; the details of which follow:

In essence, our Darul Ifta does not sanction the irreversible method of stunning implemented by many of the current day beef abattoirs. If a reversible method of stunning is implemented in a way that one is certain that the animal was slaughtered whilst alive, the meat of the animal would be permissible to consume, even though this method of stunning too is disliked. In the irreversible method of stunning there isn’t any guarantee that the animal is alive, as there is a possibility that the animal could die before reaching the slaughterer, thus this method is not at all sanctioned by our Darul-Ifta.

The crux of the discussion is that if after stunning, the animal is still alive when slaughtered, then it will be fundamentally Halaal otherwise not.

Notwithstanding the above, we would highly recommend that a person opts for unstunned meat and avoids the meat of animals that are stunned prior to slaughtering.
