Question:

The elections are coming up in May. As Muslims living in South Africa, must we vote?

Answer:
If it is believed that our votes can bring into power someone who will serve the community productively, render benefit to the masses, strive to ensure that people acquire their rights, endeavor to put a stop to injustice and will be benevolent and considerate to the Muslims then it will be correct for a person to cast his vote. However, if these criteria are not found, we would advise that a person abstain from voting. (Fataawa Mahmudiyyah Vol. 4 Pg. 618)
