Question:

Can Mufti Sahib please assist with this question.

A brother has problems with his vision. He has been to various eye specialists / optometrists. He has not had success in treatment. Some have suggested that he go for a corneal transplant. Will this be permissible?

Answer:

Our Darul-Ifta’s position with regard to organ transplant is that it is not permissible; thus, rendering a procedure like corneal transplant impermissible. The only advice that we can give you is to opt for the other alternatives that are available. You should adopt Sabr and make Du’a and Allah Taáala will do what is best for you. Hazrat Mufti Mahmood Hasan Gangohi Rahimahullah, in response to a question posed to him with regard to the issue of donation of eyes and their transplantation wherein he responded as follows: -

“Transplantation of the eye is not permissible. The same rule applies to its sale (donation) thereof irrespective of whether the donor is alive whilst this is carried out or after his death.”
