Question:

In rainy weather,
it’s permissible to make Eid Salât in the Masjid.

Now, if the Masjid of the city is very small to accommodate everyone for Eid
Salât , is it permissible or not to do two or three Jamats for Eid Salât in the
Masjid ? Can the Imam of the second Jamat be placed in the same place as the
Imam of the first jamat?

Answer:

First and foremost, it is Sunnat Muakkadah to perform Eid Salah in an Eidgaah or in an open field outside the locality as it is proven from the lifestyle and the practice of Rasoolullah صلى الله عليه وسلم and his companions. Therefore, if one performs Eid Salah in a Masjid without a valid reason, when there are arrangements made for an Eidgaah, although his Eid Salah will be counted and valid, yet he will be going against the Sunnah and he will be sinful if this is done constantly.
Moreover, for reasons like rain, unavailability of Eidgaah etc. Eid Salaah can be conducted in the Masjid as this subject-matter is proven from Ahaadith. The crux of the Ahaadith is that Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلم used to go outside Madinah to perform the Eid Salah except one time in the rainy season where he led and performed the Eid Salah in the Masjid.

Furthermore, to conduct more than one Eid Salah at one place is Makrooh (disliked) in Shariah; even though the Eid Salah will valid. In the enquired scenario, if there is no place where the Muslim males of the locality can fit and perform their Eid Salah at once or they are running out of time, they will be allowed to establish more than one Jamaat (congregation) as required at one place on condition that the Imaams are different for both the congregations.

In a nutshell, Muslim communities should perform their Eid Salah in Eidgaah or in an open field outside the locality and revive this great Sunnah and can make arrangements for weak and sick people in the Masajid. Moreover, they should not establish more than one Eid Salah at one place without a valid reason.
