Question:
1. Is there
an age restriction for a woman to dye her hair? Like a young madrasah girl
dying her hair.
2. What colours can women dye their hair?
3. Is streaking of the hair permissible?
Answer:
1. Although, there is no age restrictions with regards to the enquired Mas’ala; yet, the command of dying the hair in Ahadith was to dye the white hair not the black. Therefore, it is not advisable to dye the black hair since there are many elements which are prohibited in Shariah such as emulating disbelievers and wrongdoers, extravagance, exaggeration in adornment, etc... Nonetheless, to dye white hair is admissible in Shariah.
2. Women can dye their hair with any color known in our Hadeeth and Fiqh books. Black has been prohibited and the prohibition comes in the Hadith. Fashion colours i.e. blue, purple, green, etc. which are customary to and practiced amongst disbelievers and wrongdoers are unpermitted. Moreover, there are four colours mentioned in the books of Ahadith with regards to dying the hair, Mehndi (henna), Katam (black color which is inclined towards dark red color), yellow, and Za’fraan (saffron-color). Besides this, it should be noted that the saffron color is not allowed for the males.
3. It is allowed with the proviso that some hair has turned white.
