Accepting Zakaat to offset credit cards

Question:
can a person be given zakaat to offset their credit cards that they are owing to. Reason is they want to get out of Ribah.
Accordingly the liabilities are much more than the assets they have.
Jewellery worth about R50 000
Debt about R270 000
Answer:
In the queried scenario you stated that the liabilities far exceed the assets hence the indebted person will be eligible to receive Zakaat. He may therefore receive Zakaat funds to clear his credit card debt. Our ruling is based on the information furnished and we have not investigated the matter.
